Roman Catholics believe the elements of bread and wine literally become Christ's body and blood ("transubstantiation") by the Priest’s authority, immediately prior to being consumed by believers.

Most Protestants believe:
Most Protestants believe this observance is an ordinance in memory of Christ's sacrificed body and blood. It is a symbol only of His life now present in the believer. They reject the concept of transubstantiation.
Adventists believe:
Adventists denounce substantiation. The Lord’s Supper is a participation in the emblems of the body and blood of Jesus; an expression of faith in Him, and a willingness to “do this in remembrance of Him”. Preparation for the Supper includes self-examination, repentance, and confession. By partaking of the bread and “wine” the Lord’s death is joyfully proclaimed until He comes again. The Master ordained the service of foot-washing to signify renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christ-like humility, and to unite our hearts in love.

Luke 22:18,19. And He took the bread, and gave thanks and brake it, and gave unto them saying, “This is My body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of Me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you.”
