The Elijah Message:
What prophecy points to the return of Elijah?
Malachi 4:5, 6. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 6, And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
How did the people in Christ’s day understand this message?
Many people believed that Elijah would literally come back from heaven to live again on earth, or possibly be reborn into a new man.
Who did some people believe Jesus to be?
Some believed Jesus to be Elias (the Greek form of Elijah); and others believed that He was one of the old prophets risen again."
Luke 9:18, 19. And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 So they answered and said, “John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”
So was Elijah to return in person?
No, it was Elijah's spirit of revival and reform that was predicted in Scripture to return.
What did Jesus say about John the Baptist?
Matthew 11:13, 14. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.

Speaking of the birth of John the Baptist, the angel Gabriel had said to Zacharias,
"And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." (Luke 1:17).
What will the Spirit and power of Elijah do?
The Elijah message will bring the power of love and blessing into the families who receive it, and a curse upon those who reject it (Malachi 4:6).
Notice that the angel Gabriel rewords the prophecy of Malachi in Luke 1:16, 17: "And many of the children of Israel shall he (John the Baptist) turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him (Jesus) in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
When did prophecy say that a messenger from God would return in the spirit and power of Elijah? "
I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord." The "great and dreadful day of the Lord," is synonymous with the second coming. (Malachi 4:5-6).
Could there be another bearing an Elijah message just prior to the second coming of Jesus?
Maybe there will be, maybe this prophecy is to have another fulfillment just prior to Jesus second coming.

Characteristics of the Elijah Message.
Elijah’s message was a straight message, preached with boldness and fearlessness before Kings and Rulers.
Both John the Baptist and Elijah were fearless in preaching a straight message before rulers and governments. Jesus said that this would happen again in the last days. "You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them."
Mark 13:9. But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them.
Any other Elijah message must also be proclaimed boldly, clearly and in an uncompromising manner.
Elijah …Elijah told Ahab, "And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals."
1 Kings 18:18, And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals.
John…John had said unto Herod, “It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife." (Mark 6:18).
Simplicity in diet and dress.
Both Elijah and John were known for their simplicity in diet; which kept their mental faculties clear and their bodies strong, that they might be prepared for the special work God called them to do.
1 Kings 17:4. And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.
Matthew 3:4. Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Likewise, God’s spokespersons, in the last days need to have a strong connection between the body and the spirit. Personal living habits and dietary choices will have a direct effect on mental clarity and ability to discern truth. Remember, sin came upon the human race as a result of eating the wrong thing.
1 Corinthians 10:31. Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Simplicity in dress.
In the time when kings and priests loved to wear ornaments and long flowing robes, Elijah and John's modesty and simplicity were a stinging rebuke.
Elijah …“He (Elijah) was an hairy man (with a garment of hair), and girt with a girdle (belt) of leather about his loins (waist)."
2 Kings 1:8. So they answered him, “A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist.”
John… “And John was clothed with camel's hair and with a girdle of a skin (leather belt) about his loins (waist)."
Mark 1:6. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
Both Elijah and John made disciples of others.
Both John and Elijah spent most of their time training not the priests and Levites, but rather the common people. Similarly, the last great movement of God will not be led by clergy alone, but also by Spirit-filled lay persons
Elijah ... “ So he departed thence, and found Elisha .... and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him." (1 Kings 19:19).
John…And the disciples of John reported to him (the young man raised from the dead) of all these things." (Luke 7:18).
Both Elijah and John preached a baptism of repentance and death to self.

Both Elijah and John preached a baptism of repentance and death to self.
The Elijah message calls people to the Jordan River; a symbol of repentance and baptism. The children of Israel had to cross the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land, just as we enter the waters of baptism and cross over to a new life. Elijah was taken to heaven in a chariot of fire (translated) at the Jordan.
Elijah .."And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan.
2 Kings 2:6. Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan...
John… “Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all of the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
Matthew 3:5, 6. Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him 6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
Elijah and John both manifested humility.
"He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" (Micah 6:8.)
God’s last day people should reflect the meek and humble character of Jesus.
Elijah… “And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees." (1 Kings 18:42).
John… “He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear." (Matthew 3:11).
Elijah and John were both supremely interested in glorifying God.
In the days of Elijah and John the Baptist, God's people had been corrupted by the pagan influences around them and had compromised God's truth (1 Kings 19:14; Matthew 3:1, 2). These two brave prophets delivered a message that sparked revival and reform among God's people.
Elijah …Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” (1 Kings 18:37).
John…He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30).
Anyone preaching the Elijah message will make glorifying God their top priority. They will be wholly consecrated to God's cause, just as were John and Elijah. The Elijah message will be a trumpet call to return to "the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." (Isaiah 44;22).
Elijah and John both endured religious persecution.

Elijah and John both endured religious persecution.
In the Old Testament, a pagan queen named Jezebel married Ahab, the king of Israel. Jezebel and her daughter, Athaliah, persecuted God's people and tried to entice Ahab to kill Elijah and the other prophets.
In the New Testament, Herodias, the pagan wife of King Herod, and her daughter Salome succeeded in enticing Herod to kill John the Baptist.
Elijah… “Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not your life as the life of one of them (who had been killed on Mount Carmel) by tomorrow about this time." (1 Kings 19:2).
John… “And she (Salome) went forth, and said to her mother (Herodias), “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist." (Mark 6:24).
The persecution experienced by Elijah and John will be repeated in the last days, and even now is. "And upon her forehead was a name written,
MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus." (Revelation 17:5, 6).
The messages of Elijah and John sparked revival and reformation.
Elijah …"Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto Mount Carmel." "And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long, halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him."
1 Kings 18:19. Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel...
1 Kings 18:21. And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.
John… “John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out to him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins." (Mark 1:4, 5).
The Elijah message pointed people to Christ.
Elijah …“Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God." (1 Kings 18:36).
John… “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." (John 1:29).

John… “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." (John 1:29).
The Elijah message pointed people to Christ, to His authority and His law.
The prophecy in Malachi is introduced with the admonition, "Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments."(Malachi4:4)
In the spirit, and with the power, of Elijah, John the Baptist denounced the corruptions of the Jews, and reproved their prevailing sins. He called them to repent. "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”. (Matthew 3:2) His discourses were plain, pointed, and convincing. Many were brought to repentance. This was the work necessary in order to prepare the way for the earthly ministry of Christ.
Will another voice prepare the way for the ministry of Christ’s second coming?
Yes. In every stage of this earth’s history God has had his agencies to carry forward His work. As the Lord empowered Elijah, Elisha, and John the Baptist, to do a work of revival to prepare the people for Christ’s first coming, so He will empower his last day messengers to prepare a people for His second coming.
Luke 1:17. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Luke 12:40. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
What is the Elijah message that will be given in the last days?
The last day message will not be a message of peace and safety.
1Thessalonians 5:3. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as Labour pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.
In many churches sins have become fashionable. They are glossed over and excused. The right hand of fellowship is given to the very men who bring in false theories and sentiments. Right principles are no longer cherished. The conscience has become insensible to God’s word, and His messages calling for repentance are unheeded.
The last days Elijah massage will call people to honour the Creator. It will warn people about the judgment to come upon those who are disobedient. It will call people to come out of confusion and into truth and to be prepared for the soon coming of the Lord Jesus.
Is there found anywhere in Scripture a replica of the Elijah message, specifically for the end time?
Yes. In the book of the Bible that deals very specifically with end time events, we find a threefold message. It is a stern warning message that must go to the world to prepare a people for the coming of the Lord.
Where do we find that message?

We find that message in Revelation 14, verses 6-12.
6 “Then I saw another angel (messenger) flying in heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth – to every nation, tribe, tongue and people – 7 saying with a loud voice. “Fear God (be respectful), give glory to Him for the hour of His judgment has come, and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water. 8 And another angel followed saying, Babylon (corrupt religion) is fallen is fallen, that great city (conglomeration), because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath (false teachings) of her fornications (unfaithfulness). 9 Then a third angel followed saying with a loud voice. If anyone worships the beast (a power that opposes God) and his image (a second power like the first) and receives his mark on his forehead (is identified with him through belief) or on his hand (is identified with him through convenience), 10 he himself (He who becomes unfaithful) shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God (God’s righteous anger in the form of judgments), which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation (anger at wrong). He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb (the final judgment of destruction). 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever (until the punishment is complete); and they have no rest day and night (there is no happy ending) who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receives the mark of his name. 12 Here is the patience (those that have faithfully endured) of the saints; here are those that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.”
(These are those who are obedient to God’s commandments and walk in truth). God will have a people prepared for Christ’s second coming; they will be separate from those who receive the mark of the beast and his image.

What effect will the last day Elijah message have?
The last day message to fear God and give Him the glory will bring a controversy amongst the nations. The great issue facing people everywhere will be whether to chose between obedience to God or to chose obedience to man.
Scripture indicates that a form of worship that turns men away from the Ten Commandments will be enforced by law.
Revelation 13:8. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
God’s people, who disobey the law of men, will face persecutions and martyrdom. Already behind the scenes corrupt political and religious powers are working toward the compulsion of Sunday worship. First being introduced as a family day and a day to save the planet from the false suppositions of climate change, Sunday worship will become the test of obedience to man, whereas Sabbath keeping will be a test of the obedience to God. (Note the 4th commandment,
Exodus 20:8-11. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labour and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Today an Elijah message is beginning to stir the nations. As John the Baptist gave a message to prepare people for Christ’s first coming, so this message is to prepare people for Christ’s second coming. God’s people who are found in all nations, tribes, tongues and people are spiritual Israelites, and like the nation of Israel of long ago, are being called back to repentance and obedience in preparation for the soon coming of the Lord Jesus.
