Catholics believe Purgatory is a place or state of temporary suffering where souls of the dead are cleansed by purifying punishments, before being admitted to heaven.
Most Protestants believe:
Protestants deny the existence of Purgatory. There is some diversity in Protestants as to what happens immediately after death. Nearly all believe that the individual retains their unique identity after death. Some believe the soul goes immediately to heaven to await the “Day of Judgement” and a resurrected body. Others believe death is an unconscious state of sleep, that they will awake from on the resurrection day.
