Roman Catholics believe:
The Catholic religion teaches that salvation depends on faith, works, and sacraments.
Catholics also believe that salvation is lost when a responsible person commits a mortal sin; but it can be regained through repentance and the Sacrament of Confession. Catholics believe priests can forgive sins. They define “sin” as an act committed with “full knowledge and consent” that goes against God's will: Sins, particularly mortal sins which endanger a person's salvation, such as murder, theft and adultery, are normally “absolved” or forgiven when a person confesses his or her sins to a priest.
