Just as the Bible predicted what would happen. The Papacy was mortally wounded and it appeared it would never again power again.

The Roman question was a dispute regarding the temporal power of the popes as rulers of a civil territory in the context of the Italian Risorgimento. It ended with the Lateran Pacts between King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and Pope Pius XI in 1929.
The Lateran Treaty was an accord of 1929 between Italy and the Vatican. It was signed in February 11th of that year, and ratified in June 7th by the Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy. Upon ratification of the Lateran Treaty, the papacy recognized the state of Italy, with Rome as its capital. Italy in return recognized papal sovereignty over the Vatican City, a minute territory of 44 hectares (109 acres), and secured full independence for the pope.
In today's world the Vatican has tremendous power globally as you can see on this website. Their power is growing more each year and expanding throughout the entire world.
